Inspired by: Shelley Reed, Predator/Prey (after Oudry)
graphite, acrylic, wool on paper
As Shelly Reed’s “Predator/Prey (after Oudry)” plays with the spaces left only imagined surrounding each striking animal head, “Between and Betwixt” reveals mischievous, almost human faces and the space between them that must exist in order to connect them. Further, working in a limited palette with mixed media, “Between and Betwixt” flirts with the language of material rather than that of color, questioning which features various materials in the tangible, familiar world may symbolize the mysterious interactions of the Others.

I built the frame with the intention of created a curved housing for my drawings, playing with 3D perspective and the chiaroscuro created within the tunnel. I also played with monotone coloring to emphasize the cultural interpretation of materials, while still providing a hidden visual suggestive of an alternate world within, by painting the back of the paper with neon-orange acrylic paint only visible by peeking inside and as the light hits it.
